is a monthly ‘bring and share’ meeting for songwriters in Nottingham that has been running since March 2012 hosted by Matt Blick. We aim to help people become better songwriters by
- Encouraging writing on a regular basis
- Receiving specific, positive feedback
- Growing in understanding of songwriting through giving feedback to others
We are committed to providing a positive and supportive atmosphere and songwriters of all styles and abilities are welcome – the only conditions are that you have a new song to share.
SO YOU MEET ON A TUESDAY?
No, we meet on a Thursday
BUT THE FIRST THURSDAY IN THE MONTH?
No. The second Thursday of every month. Usually. At 8:00pm.
THAT’S REALLY CONFUSING.
That’s not a question. Also, life is confusing.
Occasionally we’ll meet on a different night if something is happening (e.g. Valentine’s Day) so make sure you sign up to the mailing list
WHERE DO WE MEET?
In Matt Blick’s house Nottingham, UK.
WHO IS IT FOR?
Any songwriter, in or around Nottingham*, who aspires to get better at the craft of songwriting. All levels and abilities welcome.
*(Visitors from ‘out of town’ are very welcome, but if you have to be able to physically attend the meeting at some point. This is not an ‘online/virtual’ group).
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL EVENING LOOK LIKE?
On arrival we ‘sign in’ with our name and song title (this provides the running order). We eat snacks and chat about music. Then each person gets to play one song (finished or unfinished) that they’ve written in the preceding month. Everyone pitches in with helpful feedback and the writer and listeners get to ask questions about the song. When everyone’s had a turn, we chat about some songwriting topic and eat some more if there’s any time left.
WHAT DOES IT COST?
The price of admission is a song idea that you’ve been working on in the previous month. That’s all (though if you’d like to bring sweets/snacks/nibbles/soft drinks to share that’s very cool too).
WHAT DO I HAVE TO COMMIT TO?
You’re a musician. The word ‘commitment’ probably brings you out in a rash. Just come when you can. An email or text to confirm numbers would be really helpful.
CAN I PLAY AN OLD SONG?
No! This is not an open mic. The whole purpose is to get you writing.
CAN I JUST WATCH?
No. It’s not a gig. Sharing a brand new song can be scary enough without the extra pressure of an audience. If you’re new and would prefer to sit the first meeting out I’d really suggest just jumping in. We don’t bite.
I’M REALLY NERVOUS ABOUT PERFORMING
It’s not performing. As you’ll be previewing a brand new song we expect you to mess up. If you can play your song flawlessly we’ll just assume you’re cheating and wrote it years ago anyway!
I’M REALLY NERVOUS ABOUT GETTING FEEDBACK
We really try our best to play nice and keep it positive and helpful. We won’t stroke your ego but no one has an interest in shooting you down in flames (especially when their song gets critiqued next!)
WHAT IF EVERYONE IS A MUCH BETTER SONGWRITER THAN ME?
Then you’re going to learn a lot from some very patient and wise people
WHAT IF EVERYONE IS A MUCH WORSE SONGWRITER THAN ME?
Then you’ll really grow in your understanding of songwriting by patiently sharing your wisdom with some very grateful learners
CAN I BRING A FRIEND?
Yes but they have to write a song first!
